John Boyer

John Boyer brings broad experience in mutual fund governance, nonprofit leadership, political appointments, and board service to his role as a MyNextSeason Advisor. He supports clients navigating professional transitions by helping them think practically about future opportunities and consider where their experience can be applied with meaning and focus. John’s approach reflects decades of work with boards, committees, civic organizations, and cultural institutions, as well as a belief in sound governance and calibrating one’s energy toward the commitments that matter most.

John has served for nearly 30 years as an Independent Director of Voya Mutual Funds and predecessor fund families, including Aetna and ING. His board service has included committee leadership across audit, compliance, contracts, investment review, nominating and governance, proxy, valuation, liquidity, cybersecurity, and AI oversight. He previously served as Board Chair during the Global Financial Crisis and helped guide complex governance decisions, including an IPO spin-off, involving more than $100B in assets under management.

John has also spent 30 years leading cultural nonprofit organizations through growth, restructuring, institutional expansion, and community engagement. He served as founding President and CEO of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art and held CEO roles with the Roosevelt Institute and The Mark Twain House & Museum. Across these roles, John partnered closely with boards, civic leaders, and cultural stakeholders to strengthen governance and guide institutional growth. His work spanned institutional planning, policy development, capital expansion, fundraising, and public programming, with a focus on broadening each organization’s reach and relevance.

John earned an MFA from Princeton University’s Department of Art and Archaeology and a BA in Art History, summa cum laude, from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He completed executive education at Harvard Business School and lives in Charlotte, North Carolina.
