After spending almost four decades as an executive for Fortune 50 retail companies, including Wal-Mart and Target, Vanessa Castagna now uses her impact and experience as an Advisor for My Next Season. Transitioning from her role as a retail executive to that of a consultant and board member, and then to Executive Advisor, Vanessa imparts an understanding of the challenges and triumphs in career transitions. As an Advisor, she utilizes these abilities to lead executives toward an impactful next season anchored in purpose.
Before joining My Next Season, Vanessa served as Chairwoman of Mervyn’s Department Stores, and as CEO and Chairwoman of JCPenney Stores, Catalogue, and Internet. In her six years at JCPenney, she controlled more than $20B in revenue and was instrumental in leading the company turnaround with a new centralized business format. For four consecutive years, she was listed in Fortune’s “The 50 Most Powerful Women in Business.”
Throughout her career, Vanessa has served on numerous boards, including her current roles as the independent director on the boards of Levi Strauss and Company and Carter’s/Oshkosh. Passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of others, Vanessa has dedicated much of her time to volunteer work. She was essential in development of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s “Afterschool” Program, transforming it into a national program. She also received the AMY award in recognition of her outstanding support of educational opportunities for young individuals studying for careers in the apparel industry. Vanessa currently divides her time between Dallas and Naples, Florida.
